OBLIVION HIGHWAY

All Words © 2013 By SCOTT ENDSLEY

AND SO IT GOES

Early Monday mornin’ blues

Late for work, can’t seem to find my shoes.

Out the door at half past nine

The car won’t start, there’s no better luck than mine… mama.

Well I’ll try once more real hard not to get angry

As I gently put my fist right through the door---

And so it goes…

Drivin’ twice the speed of light,

Got it floored and holdin’ on real tight.

Thought for sure I had it made

But a block ahead they were holdin’ a parade… mama

Well I’ll try once more real hard not to get angry

As I gently put my fist right through the door

Oww!

Well I’ll try once more real hard not to get angry

As I gently put my fist right through the door---

And so it goes…

Early Tuesday mornin’ blues

Once again can’t seem to find my shoes.

Out the door at half past nine

Hit a tree, but at least the car started fine… mama

Well I’ll try once more not to get angry

As I gently put my fist right through the door---

And so it goes (on and on) etc…

ANGELINA (EYES OF FIRE)

Far away at sea

Neath a broken sail

My eyes found moonlight again

Your eyes caused this ship to spin

Out of control, out of control.

On an empty shore

As the tide rolls in

My heart lay shipwrecked again

Buried neath the washed up sand…

Ooh ooh…

Angelina, eyes of fire

Burn down the walls of fear

That hold me in the mire.

Angelina, eyes of fire

Burn down the walls of fear

That hold me in the mire

I’m a broken man

On a bended knee

I’m a jester for your Majesty—

In the courtyard of Eternity

I’ll be your fool, I’ll be your fool.

With a heart full of words

Yet a broken tongue

I play now softly my weary tune…

Ooh Ooh…

Angelina, eyes of fire

Burn down the walls of fear

That hold me in the mire.

Angelina, eyes of fire

Burn down the walls of fear

That hold me in the mire.

CRY LIKE THE RAINFALL

Another day of just

Waitin’ to see your eyes.

And just like the day before

I’ll hold the door, but to my surprise

You’ll keep on walkin’ and not look back

 Even though I said “hello.”

It’s just the same everyday

And I thought you might like to know---

That I just cry like the rainfall

Till the Sun begins to shine,

But the rain my never stop

While you still cloud my mind.

How could it be

That the Sun refuses to shine on me?

You must have spoke to him

About the fool I’ve been

It’s plain to see.

But I’ll still want you come rain or shine

And there’s nothin’

You can do,

To take this wish from me

And until it all comes true…

Well I’ll just cry like the rainfall

Till the sun begins to shine

And the rain may never stop

While you still cloud my mind.

Perhaps I’m just sorta wastin’ time

With my back to the wall.

Standing in the rain for you;

Ooh let it fall, let it fall!

But I’ll still want you

Come rain or shine

And there’s nothin’ you can do

To take this wish from me

And until it all comes true…

Well I’ll just cry like the rainfall

Till the Sun begins to shine

But the rain may never stop

While you still cloud my mind

While you still cloud my mind.

MEAN WOMAN

Well you sent me to my room cause I forgot the trash

So I’ll play some rock-n-roll until the windows crash.

I guess I’m supposed to stay until I’ve seen the light

Well I ain’t no bleedin’ heart I’m gonna put up a fight!

Well ya say ya don’t like the way I wear my hair.

So I guess I’ll just grow it to my underwear.

You say I have no manners, I’m a big disgrace.

I’m as bad as Michael Jackson whydontcha slap my face?

Well I’m getting’ pretty hungry ya better open the door!

I’ve learned my lesson well, next time I’ll do my chores.

Open up the door or I’ll break it down with force,

And if I break my leg, I’ll just file for divorce! Yeeahhh!

OBLIVION HIGHWAY

On the road neath the moon,

You’ll surely be home soon;

When a man out of nowhere thumbs you a ride.

With his suitcase in his hand

It all seems so very planned,

As he greets you with his name

And calmly gets inside.

There’s not an exit

For at least one hundred miles

And the road only goes one way.

You’ll surely pay your very

Soul for your toll

When traveling down oblivion highway.

Not much more is really said

Till he slowly turns his head

And tells you he remembers the last time you were here.

Well it all seems so hazy

You simply think he’s crazy,

Till he proudly, one by one,

Names your every fear.

There’s not an exit

For at least one hundred miles

And the road only goes one way.

You’ll surely pay your very

Soul for your toll

When travelin’ down oblivion highway.

His voice begins to sound

Familiar to you now

As the sweat rolls slowly down your brow

Well there’s no way out but the way back in—

When traveling down oblivion highway.

One more mile left to roam

You’re just about home

With a stranger who thanks you for being so very kind.

He says, “I knew we’d meet again, oh how long it has been;

I’m the part of you so long ago you thought you left behind.”

La la la la la etc.

You’ll surely pay your very

Soul for your toll,

When travelin’ down oblivion highway.

Travelin’ down oblivion highway.

OKLAHOMA (WHERE THE HILLS ARE MOUNTAINS)

I was drivin’ in from Texas

And everything was fine

But I thought I up and died

When I crossed that border line.

I heard a mighty slash

And I lost my heavy load,

I thought I fell in the river

But it was a chug hole in the road.

Well later down the highway

There’s a “Hy-Po” with a smile.

There’s a Howard Johnson’s everywhere

And a tollbooth every mile.

Well you’d think they’d find the money

To fix this lousy road,

But the money goes to the Governor

So he can fix his commode.

Oklahoma, where the hills are mountains

And the excess wheat overflows like fountains.

We gave her to the Indians,

Did our wonderful deed,

Then we discovered there was oil,

But we didn’t mean to mislead.

Well I bought my ticket early

Tornado season’s here

So I’m sittin’ in the bleachers

And I’m drinkin’ myself a beer.

I’m feelin’ purdy lonely

But have no one to blame;

Before I came to this state

Thought the dust bowl was a football game

Well about an hour later

The sky was turnin’ black.

I swear I saw 20 or more

Dive in an underground shack.

There was lightnin’ all around

And I heard a freight train sound.

I was prayin’ for my mother

To get me safely outta town.

Oklahoma, where the hills are mountains

And the excess wheat overflows like fountains.

We gave her to the Indians

And did our wonderful deed

Then we discovered there was oil,

But we didn’t mean to mislead.

Alright, change gear…

I was pullin’ into Tulsa

It was a hundred in the shade.

The humidity was rather thick

You could drink it like lemonade.

The mosquitoes were so plentiful,

And though it sounds absurd,

I never saw a scissortail,

So they must be they state bird.

Well about an hour later

When things began to cool down,

I noticed that the sky had cleared

And things turned to green from brown.

Well I’m glad to be alive

And I guess I’m doing fine,

Cause up the road about a half a mile

Is the Kansas border line.

Oklahoma, where the hills are mountains

And the excess wheat overflows like fountains.

We gave her to the Indians,

Did our wonderful deed.

Then we discovered there was oil,

But we didn’t mean to mislead…

Pardon me fellas, I’m gonna go climb a mountain. Be back in about 5 minutes…

SHE WAS ALL

She was all of the sparkling winter white.

She was all of the warmth of winter night.

And she was every bit of the colors in the fall.

And through the spring she loved me---

Until summer, she was all.

She was all, but all at once she went away.

Dark is the sky, no matter night or day.

My heart is cold and naked as the trees in late fall,

And yearning for her warmth again

In the spring when she was all.

She was all of the sparkling winter white.

She was all of the warmth of winter night.

And she was every bit of the colors in the fall.

And through the spring she loved me---

Until summer, she was all.

THINGS I NEVER SAID

Things I never said keep runnin’ through my mind

Though I left along the way some clues for you to find.

You’ll just never know how deep I fell inside,

Could have quenched the desert Sun with all the tears that I cried.

And I’ll just never know if somehow we could have loved,

Seems as though we met half way, but it simply wasn’t enough.

And to face another day is to meet head on with dread.

Looking back on day to day on all the things I never said.

Things I never said has brought me where I am,

So confused without your love; one emotional traffic jam.

Had to do it all again I’d be broken to my knees.

There’d be no lack of love and no shame in my pleas.

Love you more than life itself and without you all is vain,

But we only met hallway so nothing lost and nothing's gained.

But to face another day is to meet head on with dead,

When looking back from day to day on all the things I never said.

YOU CAN BELIEVE WHAT YOU WANNA BELIEVE

In a lonely manger, the Son of Man was born;

And He came into the world that day to comfort those who mourn.

To satisfy their hunger, became their daily bread.

And He spoke of being born again, yes to raise the living dead.

You can believe what you wanna believe,

You’re clearly free to choose

You can take ahold of the gift of life,

Or simply pay your dues.

Yes you can believe what you wanna believe,

But I hope someday you’ll see---

That Jesus Christ had you in mind,

When they nailed Him to that tree.

And though He walked among us,

The Son of God was He,

And He dared to say, “I Am the way,

That leads to eternity.”

But their hearts were hardened,

And called it blasphemy.

And as they killed Him he forgave them all

For He loved even His enemy.

You can believe what you wanna believe,

You’re clearly free to choose

You can take ahold of the gift of life,

Or simply pay your dues.

Yes you can believe what you wanna believe,

But I hope someday you’ll see---

That Jesus Christ had you in mind,

When they nailed Him to that tree.

Yes, Jesus Christ had you in mind

When they nailed Him to that tree.

WORDS FROM

HONESTY IN MOTION

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

And so you say you found someone who shines just like a dream,

I hope you’re just as satisfied and happy as you seem.

You say he’s like no other soul, the wind beneath his feet;

He’s all the things that make your world complete.

But he’ll be gone before you can turn around

And he’ll have nothing more to say,

And when he’s gone away--- I’ll be around;

When first Impressions fade away.

So long before the winds of change blew everything away

Like the sweet, sweet way you’d look at me when in my arms you’d lay.

But now you’re in the arms of someone else you call your own.

How long my love before you come back home?

He’ll be gone before you can turn around

And he’ll have nothing more to say,

And when he’s gone away--- I’ll be around;

When first Impressions fade away.

HE KNOWS YOUR HEART

You see the ashes of a life that used to be.

You hear the haunting laughter of grim reality.

You’re going nowhere with no promise you can see---

So lonely drowning in the sea.

I see an empty face that’s searching for a soul.

I see two broken arms, reaching for control.

You wish to buy the part of you that’s done been sold,

I see a broken heart of gold.

The blood of sacrifice is healing to the lame.

The man, who gave you life, can give it once again.

His name is Jesus and He loves you just the same,

He knows your heart, not just your name.

HONESTY IN MOTION

I’ve never seen such honesty in motion,

Though you try to hide yourself inside a potion.

It’s not really you, you want the world to know.

Like sunken treasure neath the ocean---

When the gold is found, in a ship with years of erosion

It’s still radiant, like you it has that glow.

And I wish I knew a way to say, I love you

But I know it’s not your style.

If I had anything, that you would want as yours---

How I’d gladly trade it for your smile.

The silent truth behind your eyes

Is all I need in a world deceived by lies,

Well they can’t hold me down for all I see is you.

Your mirror laments of all your sorrow

And where you’ll be tomorrow,

But take my loving hand; be here today with me.

How I wish I knew a way to free your lovely soul;

How I’d gladly take that thorn from your flesh.

For you were born to be a princess of a world that’s coming home,

Set your honesty in motion like a beacon in the storm.

How I wish I knew a way to say, I love you

But I know it’s not your style.

If I had anything, that you would want as yours---

How I’d gladly trade it for your smile.

How I’d gladly trade it for your smile.

MY BABY LEFT ME

I was layin’ in the nude till a quarter till three

Just me and myself, and my color TV.

When on comes a man with a football in his hand

Sayin’ he eats turf, and reporters for dessert.

So I put on some clothes and I went out the door,

I beat up the mailman, don’t know what for.

Well my baby left me

She left me lyin’ on the floor.

(Left me lyin’ on the floor).

Well my baby left me

I hope she don’t leave no more.

(Hope she don’t leave me no more).

Well she left me lyin’ on the floor with a broken heart.

SET ON FIRE

Blue, blue night set on fire,

Dazzling color dance on silver clouds.

I can see them in your lovely eyes.

Reflection of the new Sunrise.

It should come as no surprise that---

I’m in love with you.

Cold, cold heart set on fire,

Hopelessly resisting, feel it burn.

Tears and pain I’ve spent in jest.

Just can’t seem to find no rest.

Hide me in your loving breast.

I’m in love with you.

I’m in love with you.

Blue, blue night set on fire.

Watch the Sun hide his almost ashamed.

Whispered words there’s none to tell---

Sun and Moon they’ll know so well

When they hear the wedding bell

I’m in love with you.

I’m in love with you.

I’m in love with you.

TEARS AGO

Time again to say I’m sorry

I spoke my heart, I’m left so lonely;

Wondering if I should’ve ever tried at all.

Tears ago I thought I knew

But now I know what love will do;

Hold it in, don’t let your feelings show.

Well Eva now, the pain is over

But where to go, there is no answer;

No one’s there, I guess I’ll close the door.

TEARS ARE FREE

Along the way to nowhere fast,

I came across a smile from the past,

It seemed to say, “I know just who you are,

If you’ll just take my hand the road can’t be that far!”

But all was lost just inside one lonely breath

Her hand was cold, and her skin was pale like death---

She was looking for the answers in the questions of my eyes,

And there was nothing I could do but merely sympathize.

So rudely awakened from my fantasy,

The truth’s too bright---my eyes don’t wanna see.

I wish to slumber and lose identity;

If not the one for her, then who am I to be?

From late until the morning her words had free flowed.

She looked at me so nakedly, but her heart was fully clothed:

She’s an angel whose wings are clipped and craves deliverance,

And there is nothing I can offer her, except coincidence.

Oh Annie, Ahhhh tears are free

How they’ll whisper in your ears.

Oh Annie, Ahhhh can’t you see

There’s a garden in this Dead Sea.

I long to lead you there my friend,

I long to be with you and see it to the end;

But the road is dividing fast

The strings are unattached

The curtain is down at last on me.

The words were few, and far between,

Our hearts were dancing as we would loudly sing

A chorus of tears from a medley of years;

Auditioning what we held so sweetly to our ears.

But early in the morning’s light she left me like a dream---

The soul bond was torn in half; I felt my body scream.

I saw the blood of living worth trickle to die,

As the last breath of life in me was wasted in a sigh.

And now I seem as half a man

My heart is leading me; I don’t know where I stand.

I can only follow her and look to her ahead:

She never turns around, was it something that I said?

For when our eyes meet now you vainly try to hide.

Is it me that you really fear or something deep inside?

How can you be afraid of a love that has no end?

I never want to take from you, but simply be your friend.

Oh Annie, Ahhhh tears are free

How they whisper in my ears.

Oh Annie, Ahhhh help me see

There’s a garden in this Dead Sea.

Oh Annie, Ahhhh tears are free

How they’ll whisper in your ears.

Oh Annie, Ahhhh can’t you see

There’s a garden in this Dead Sea.

I long to lead you there my friend,

I long to be with you and see it to the end;

But the road is dividing fast

The strings are unattached

The curtain is down at last on me.

THAT STILL VOICE

I am that still voice that speaks in your soul.

You think you’re master, I have all control.

I am the difference between wrong or right,

I choose the colors between black or white

I am that still voice that speaks in your soul.

Confusion is just not what I’ll reply.

My answer is definite, no questions of why.

No compromise of any kind will bargain my stand.

I am the right that sees your left hand.

I am that still voice that speaks in your soul.

I am that still voice that speaks in your soul.

You think you’re master, I have all control.

I am the difference between wrong or right,

I choose the colors between black or white

I am that still voice that speaks in your soul.

YES I HAD NO COFFEE

Early one bright Sunday morning

I went to McDonalds for my coffee break.

I sat down with my Egg Mcmuffin,

And a big ol chocolate shake.

Well they had no coffee

No they had no coffee

Yes they had no coffee

In the middle of the day.

I jumped in my automobile--

Discouragingly driving away.

Waking up from this horrible dream,

With a horrible start of the day.

Yes I had no coffee

Yes I had no coffee

No I had no coffee

In the middle of the day.

Guzzling down some orange juice

And reading the newspaper,

If this song brings you any sorrow

Then do for me just one favor:

Please bring me some coffee

Oh, please bring me some coffee

Please bring me some coffee:

Or I’ll Break Your Little Neck!!!
